LIFE* THE HOLY GRAIL OF HAIR

March 7, 2012 in LIFE

I have found the HOLY GRAIL!!!! Okay well what I would consider the holy grail of hair care.  After much trepidation and a series of stalker-ish phone calls and texts to my friend in DC, I caved and purchased Curlformers.  They arrived and for whatever reason I didn’t jump on them immediately.  I think I waited about two weeks before attempting to use them.  Much of my concern was over the amount of money I spent on them and that if they didn’t work I would have wasted damn near $70.

Soo on Sunday night I decided to dive in.  Since I already know that my hair takes forever and a day to air dry, I decided to spritz and detangle my hair before threading my hair through the curler.  Here’s how it went…

Spritz, spritz, spritz

Add leave-in conditioner

Comb from the ends up

Paddle brunch to smooth my hair out

Add a little fax seed gel with a focus on the ends

Thread into curler

Voila!

A NEW YEAR…NEW HAIR

January 1, 2012 in LIFE, NOW YOU KNOW

It’s been some time since my last post.  This holiday season has allowed me to get off the grid a bit and relax.  If you’ve followed my hair journey I have great news!  I successfully refrained from putting heat to my hair for 6 months and the reward….you guessed it a trip to the salon for a wash trim and blow out to get ready for the New Year.  After what happened to me, I’ve been nervous to go to salon but with the help of my bestie I dove right in.  Here are the results!

HAIR HELP!

July 29, 2011 in LIFE

Dear Sweet Baby Jesus,

It’s been a little over a month since my last blow out.  I’m trying really hard to stay away from all heat but man this is a struggle.  My ends are still straight and no matter what I do I don’t feel like the natural curl pattern is ever going to get to them.  Also, the middle of my head is consistently dry no matter what I use.  Anyone have any suggestions?

HAIR RULES

July 25, 2011 in LIFE

Since my “big unintentional chop” I’ve been on the hunt for a hairstyle that works for me without going for weekly blowouts since I’m working on training me hair. The two styles that I’ve taken to are the wondrous slick back and the chiney bump (aka two strand twist with knot). For me the slick back gets boring after a while and the chiney bump is a to labor intensive especially when doing EVERY SINGLE NIGHT (shoot and don’t let it be humid – all your hard work goes right out the window).

There needs to me something in the middle.  Soo after scouring several different hair sites, blogs and YouTube channels I’ve decided I’m going to try the dry flat twist.

This is the tutorial that I’m going to follow.

Wish me luck!

ON DISPLAY* HAPPY 1 YEAR…. DONE & DONE

June 27, 2011 in LIFE, ON DISPLAY

Dear Diary,

It’s been ONE WHOLE year since my last relaxer and I did it!  It’s been a stuggle in finding the right products and hairstyles that I can do myself but I did it!  I’ve been battling whether to do the big chop but was holding on to my little length for dear life until I hit the year and a half mark.  The last time that I washed my hair I could see all the breakage and to be real, I felt pathetic for wanting to keep my DEAD ends.  So I headed into the salon to cut 2 inches off the ends and then planned to cut the last 2 in a couple months but oh things can’t go so smoothly for me can they!

This is what went down….

Block highlights – Check!

Wash and deep condition – Check!

1 hour under the dryer – Check!

Talking to my hair stylist about how many inches I want cut off my hair and her understanding – Check!

Some how I decide to stop her before the trim to ask how much relaxer I had left.  She shows me and I in wide-eyed horror say “oh okay”.

Well HOMEGIRL took my “oh okay” to mean go ahead and friggin’ make the cut.

LAWD.

Once that first snip was done there was no going back and the rest is history.

As my friend said when I texted her the picture of my hair…. “Hello NURSE” lol

P.S.  Here are some pictures of my hair and posts about my journey.

ON DISPLAY* CHANNELING JANELLE MONAE

H&M top, Citizens of Humanity jeans, H&M sandals

The other day I sported this look to work and only after looking at the picture taken of me did I realize that I was seriously channeling Janelle Monaé by way of Frankenstein with the structured shoulders and high hair.  I woke up with my hair in a MESS so the only alternative I had was to pin-up the back and well… the front just wouldn’t go down.

Soo voi la!

THE ROAD TO MY ROOTS

March 4, 2011 in LIFE

Hello my name is DK and it’s been NINE WHOLE MONTHS since my last relaxer…

As I’ve written before, the last time I was all-natural was when I was 11 years old.  As a result of training I’ve looked into a few new ways to maintain my hair for work and social purposes.  I’ve uncovered two new staples in my hair preservation.

  1. Miss Jessies Curly Meringue
  2. Clip-ins

I’ve always been blessed with thick hair and length has never been an issue however with this transition I’ve noticed a change.  My hair doesn’t feel the same from the root to the tip and no I’m not talking about curly vs straight.  Due to the new growth, my roots have become that much thicker resulting in my ends feeling that much thinner.  With the help of my lady friends, I was able to find a solution.  I’ve started to use clip-ins after my fresh blowouts.  I’m a virgin to adding anything extra to my hair.  No Brandy braids as a kid, no sew in’s, not glue in’s nada so I was extremely hesitant to do anything.

I had QUESTIONS!

WOES IS ME….

December 13, 2010 in LIFE

Photo 25
So I’m bored already. I told you guys a few months ago that I was going natural and honestly so far so good.

But I.AM.BORED.

6 months down… Eternity to go!

My curl pattern is developing quiet nicely and once it’s all said and done I think I’ll be happy but that’s going to take a year and a half at the very least. I’m not doing what most do when they go natural and chop off the relaxer once it hits a certain length. I’m just going to ride the wave and cut the ends as I go.
They say idle hands are the devils playground…these idle hands are no different. Yes that was a bit extreme but you know what I mean.

This weekend when I went for my usual wash & set I decided to color my hair. Now I’ve been through all types of hair changes. Dying and dying and re-dying my hair which resulted in me chopping it off and “starting” fresh right after graduating. So I took baby steps and dyed the back (semi-permanent coffee) to even out the blonde streaks and then dyed some of the front (permanent copper).  I’ve done my whole head copper before but I’m going to keep it basic. Hopefully this can hold me over to the summer.

OBSESSION * SPIN PIN

November 17, 2010 in OBSESSION

I believe that we’ve all seen those Goody commercials where they claim that they’ve created one pin that can take the place of 20 bobby pins.

I was a skeptic.

I purchased it in CVS last week.

Placed it on my dresser but kept the receipt because I was SURE it wasn’t going to work.

I swear I looked at it sitting there every day for a week.

Last night I decided to try it.

Let me tell you. The spin pin is the TRUTH. I used two spin pin’s in my bun and it is NOT BUDGING.  If I was only getting money for this testimonial.

SMH HA! (Yes I did use text talk)

AU NATURAL

August 5, 2010 in ON DISPLAY

Let’s see… As of late I’ve been battling with the idea of going au natural and turning my back on that creamy crack (my loyal friend…I want to say for at least 14+ years).  I’m not quiet sure why in the hell I want to go down this forgotten journey in search of my natural curl pattern.  Shoot…all I can foresee are broken combs and diesel arms from spending hours TRYING to preserve my sexy.

I have a few friends who went natural during college or soon there after and to be honest look beautiful.  But please know one thing, in order for them to achieve that beauty they sure as hell went through some drama and for some they’re still going through issues!  Whether they cut all their hair off and started from scratch or having that puffy roots/bone straight ends look.  Best believe they did look crazy the minute they hit the club or even went outside during humid weather for that matter.  Soooo since there is not a insta-natural product I have frequent conversations with MP (who is natural) about what I can do to make the transition as easy as possible. I even went as far as discussing having a lace front!  HAHAHAHA right! That doesn’t even make sense … I was delirious to even think of going from never having a weave in my life to getting a straight up lace front!  Plus if you knew me, you know damn well I wouldn’t last longer than 17 minutes with that covering the hair I already have on my head.

To be real I should have just grown it out when I cut it off 2 years ago but nooooo I kept getting that creamy crack itch and here I am two years later with a good amount of length and breaking out into cold sweats thinking that in order for this “au natural” look to go down I MUST cut it off because I can’t deal with working out 3-4 days a week, having the puffy root syndrome and trying to look right for work 5 days out of the week.

I just want to wake up have my natural hair so I can stop being so wishy-washy with my decision.  Is that too much to ask for? GEEZE!

I see beautiful and stylish natural hair all around me (dammit even my mothers natural) but check it… even natural heads have issues with finding that one magic product that does the right job – their version of that creamy crack.

The life and times I tell you… THE LIFE AND TIMES!

One stylish “au natural” make-up artist diva and fellow Harlemite that I recently met at a shoot was Kenecia Lashae. You can check out her work at www.KeneciaLashae.com and see her picture below (yes I used my blackberry camera AGAIN)
